Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday stressed the need to stand by farmers in light of the unique challenges surrounding the production of crops like tobacco and mango and advised the officials to adopt a commercial perspective when dealing with agricultural produce and to take steps to secure the best possible prices for farmers.

Naidu directed officials to expedite the procurement of the remaining 53 million kilograms. Out of this, arrangements have been made for 24 companies to purchase 33 million kilograms, while AP Markfed is set to procure the remaining 20 million kilograms.

At a review meeting held at the Secretariat on support prices for mango, tobacco, and cocoa, the Chief Minister was informed that 80 million kilograms of HD Burley tobacco were produced this year. Of this, 27 million kilograms have already been sold.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that procurement operations at these centers will be intensified starting Thursday. The Chief Minister noted that he had already discussed the reduction of import duties on palm oil and the lowering of GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5% with the Central Government and asked the officials to coordinate with the relevant central departments on these matters.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of keeping farmers informed about crop plans, especially concerning mango cultivation. To ensure fair pricing, farmers need timely information on market demand. Currently, the government is providing an additional support price of Rs.4 per kg for mangoes.

Regarding cocoa, officials reported that 12,000 metric tonnes have been produced this year, and 10,000 metric tonnes have already been sold. They are currently procuring 80 to 100 metric tonnes per day. Naidu directed that the remaining stock be procured by the first week of July.

Agriculture Minister K. Achen Naidu and senior officials from the agriculture and horticulture departments attended.
